The youngest child of Ranginui and Papatūānuku, Rūaumoko was carried by Papatūānuku to the underworld. There, he was given fire to keep him warm. His movements and the fire he wields cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and the formation of geothermal areas. Through these teachings we learn how Rūaumoko is deeply interwoven with the natural phenomena of the land, the actual forces beneath the earth's surface that shape it including heat, pressure and movement.          

His influence is a powerful reminder of the earth's dynamic nature and our need to respect and adapt to its changes. Understanding Rūaumoko means understanding how the ground itself behaves, why it shifts, where heat rises from below, how geothermal systems form and sustain themselves. His presence teaches us about the strength found in adaptation, the importance of being in tune with the forces that shape our whenua, and the respect that must be accorded to power we can study and prepare for, but never fully control. 

Through Rūaumoko we learn to embrace change, respect the power of nature, and understand our place within systems far larger than ourselves. Rūaumoko symbolises the unseen potential and creative forces within us and within the earth, urging us to unlock our hidden capabilities, to look beneath the surface of things, and to approach life's transformations with the same rigor his forces demand. That is, observation, respect and preparedness, alongside optimism, courage and strength.
